Detective Tamburro was shot and killed when he attempted to intervene in a robbery of a liquor store. Detective Tamburro was off-duty and talking with the manager of the store when a gunman entered and announced a robbery. The suspect had taken $50 from the manager, when Detective Tamburro reached for his service weapon. The suspect opened fire, killing Detective Tamburro.

Two suspects were later apprehended. The suspect who shot Detective Tamburro pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison.

Detective Tamburro had served with the Essex County Sheriff's Department for 9 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

Deputy Chief McGuirk was shot and killed when two men attempted to car jack him in the parking lot of his apartment building. When the two suspects attempted to take Chief McGuirk's car. Chief McGuirk attempted to arrest the suspect, when one suspect drew a .38-caliber revolver and fired three times, killing Chief McGuirk.

The suspects were later apprehended and plead guilty to murder charges.

Sergeant Taylor was shot and killed when he attempted to arrest two suspect who were robbing a bar. Detective Robert Walls was also shot and wounded in the incident and later died from his wounds.

Sergeant Taylor and Detective Walls were off-duty and patronizing a bar on Seventh Street in Newark, New Jersey. Two masked men entered the bar and announced a robbery. When Sergeant Taylor attempted to intervene, he was shot and killed by one of the suspect. Detective Walls drew his weapons, but was shot and seriously wounded by one of the suspects. He died 24 days later from his wounds.

Three suspect were later apprehended and charged with murder.

Sergeant Taylor had served with the Essex County Sheriff's Department for 26 years and was survived by his wife.

Detective Walls died of wounds he received the previous month when he was shot while attempting to arrest two suspect committing a robbery Sergeant Taylor was shot and killed in the same incident.
